Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative (GRBI)Protecting Nature. Connecting Communities.
The Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative (GRBI) is a flagship environmental programme of the Riverside City Improvement District (CID), dedicated to protecting and enhancing the natural assets that make the Riverside Precinct unique.
Founded on a shared vision of conservation, sustainability, and community partnership, the initiative is working to conserve and connect approximately 280 hectares of green spaces throughout Riverside. These natural areas play a vital role in supporting biodiversity, strengthening environmental resilience, and creating opportunities for recreation, education, and community engagement.

At the heart of the initiative lies the Riverside Reserve – a significant natural asset that provides space for conservation, outdoor recreation, and meaningful connections between people and nature. Together with the surrounding ecological corridors and green spaces, it forms the foundation of a connected urban park system within one of the Lowveld's most vibrant business and lifestyle destinations.
The GRBI is committed to safeguarding the region's unique flora and fauna, including river otters, serval cats, and a diverse range of birdlife. By protecting these ecosystems today, the initiative is helping to create a future where biodiversity, economic growth, and community well-being can thrive side by side.
Through strong partnerships, innovative thinking, and a long-term vision, the GRBI is creating a safe, future-fit green asset that promotes conservation, social cohesion, cultural vibrancy, and sustainable development throughout the Riverside Precinct.

Riverside Reserve
Located just north of the Riverside precinct, the Riverside Reserve is a contiguous area of more than 50 hectares that includes sections of the Nels River and a landscape rich in natural biodiversity and scenic beauty.
Today, the Riverside Reserve offers a variety of recreational and nature-based experiences for visitors of all ages. Guests can enjoy walking and cycling trails that wind through natural landscapes, as well as expansive green spaces ideal for picnics, relaxation, and outdoor recreation. Park benches positioned along the Nels River and at scenic lookout points provide peaceful spaces to read, unwind, or simply enjoy the surrounding environment. Birdwatchers are especially drawn to the Reserve, where more than 100 bird species have already been recorded. The annual Birding Day further celebrates this rich biodiversity by encouraging enthusiasts to observe and document the remarkable variety of birdlife found within the Reserve.
